Neural therapy is based on the principles that illness is triggered or sustained by "interference fields" (such as scars and inflammation). The imbalance in electrical potential caused by these interference fields spreads via the nervous system and thus causes pain or illness in other parts of the body. The aim of the therapy is to bring about a positive change in these interference fields and thus to treat illness through the vegetative nervous system. It works by injecting a local anaesthetic, such as procaine or lidocaine, into the suspected interference field. The drug can also be administered directly where the pain is, or at certain acupuncture points.
