Medical aids

The law defines medical aids as products you can attach to yourself or that a helper (independent person not involved in treating the illness) can use on you. They are shown on the aids and appliances list (abbreviated as “MiGeL”) of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

Typical examples include incontinence materials used for bladder problems, blood sugar measurement devices for diabetics, anti-embolism stockings, and equipment for breathing therapy for sleep apnea or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Medical aids also include bandages and supports to stabilise joints or fractured bones.

What is covered?

Medical aids are covered under basic insurance up to the prescribed limit, less the deductible and the retention fee. This applies only to aids shown on the MiGeL. The person is responsible for any amounts over this limit. Aids a medical specialist (hospital or nursing home staff, carer, doctor, physiotherapist, ergotherapist, etc.) uses on you are included in the cost of the treatment.
