Autogenic training

Self-guided relaxation method that concentrates on sensations within the body; developed by Johannes Henrich Schultz (1884–1970).

Relaxation is achieved by silently repeating specific commands to the brain, such as "my arm is feeling heavier and heavier". This is known as auto-suggestion. The method is used to create a feeling of heaviness, to slow down the heartbeat and breathing, and to generate warmth in the body and a sense of cool on the forehead. The exercises can be done while sitting or lying down.
