CSS LERB-KONGRESS 2024 GURTEN

5th CSS Congress: AI in healthcare

Healthcare is facing major upheavals, with changes driven in large part by megatrends such as artificial intelligence. AI is set to fundamentally change how we understand health and how care is delivered. Against this backdrop, CSS held its 5th Congress for healthcare providers and partners on the Gurten in Bern.

Ever since artificial intelligence became a subject of discussion, many have been asking what opportunities it offers for the development of the healthcare system and where clear boundaries need to be drawn.

At the 5th CSS Congress on 7 November 2024, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on these questions. Through keynote talks, interviews and a panel discussion, speakers explored how AI is already being used in areas such as neurology, pharmaceuticals, palliative care and at the tech giant Google. The event also examined how the entire system could change in the future through the use of AI.

The combination of humans and AI

AI alone is unlikely to be a universal solution. However, when healthcare professionals and AI join forces, the combination can generate clear added value and open up development opportunities that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The fact that this potential has not yet been fully realised is largely due to overarching challenges in implementing AI applications. What works in a limited, exploratory setting now needs to be scaled up.

AI in healthcare: milestones and hurdles

Speakers also addressed the shared milestones required to achieve meaningful progress in the healthcare system. It is crucial to drive joint projects forward and to create more opportunities to access and make use of existing data. Alongside funding, regulatory issues relating to data security and responsibility remain major obstacles to rapid development. Encouragingly, public trust in collaboration between artificial intelligence and medical professionals appears to have increased. For this reason, it will be essential to involve clients directly in the future use of AI in healthcare.
