The uterus normally points forward towards the bladder. Sometimes, however, it points backward towards the rectum. This often goes unnoticed but can sometimes cause lower back pain or menstrual pain.

Symptoms

Main symptoms

  • Pain in the lower back and deep in the lower abdomen
  • Menstrual disorders (painful periods, heavy bleeding)
  • No or slight symptoms

Other symptoms

  • Pain during intercourse
  • Constipation
  • Women: difficulty in falling pregnant, sometimes infertility

Causes and treatment

Causes

  • Often unclear
  • Loosening of tissue (connective tissue surrounding the uterus)
  • Inflamed adhesions in the pelvic area
