Tendonitis

Overload, rheumatic conditions and bacterial infections can cause inflammation of the tendons.

Overview

Overload, rheumatic conditions and bacterial infections can cause inflammation of the tendons. Tendonitis most often occurs in the hands and leads to pain during movement and swelling. Immobilisation and cooling of the affected joint can provide relief.

Symptoms

Main symptoms

  • Symptoms often occur in the hand
  • Painful during movement
  • Swelling, red and overheated skin
  • Painful when pressing on the tendon

Other symptoms

  • Sometimes, grating or crackling sound or feeling when you move the tendon

Complications of a bacterial infection

The smallest movement or touch of the affected finger is painful

  • Whole finger is red and severely swollen
  • Swelling spreads to the back of the hand
  • Red streaks along the forearm
  • Fever

Causes and treatment

Causes

  • Repeated and constant movement (e.g. writing)
  • Rheumatic conditions
  • Bacteria entering the tendon through a wound (bite, sting) and starting to multiply

Further treatment by your doctor / in hospital

Possible tests
  • Blood test (inflammatory markers)
  • X-ray
Possible therapies
  • Immobilisation of affected joint with a rigid bandage (splint, plastic brace)
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Operation and antibiotics (for bacterial infection of tendon)

What can I do myself?

  • Immobilisation
  • Cooling
  • Anti-inflammatory ointment
  • Avoid repetitive hand movements
  • Correct posture and ergonomically design your workspace

When to see a doctor?

  • Constant and severe pain
  • Redness and overheating
  • Fieber
  • Red streaks on forearm
