Changing health insurer

Would you like to change to CSS as your new health insurer? It couldn’t be easier – it only takes a few steps. Don’t forget the period of notice for your current health insurance.

What to do for basic insurance:

  1. Generate your own offer in the premium calculator or request personal advice.
  2. Take out the insurance online or send the signed application to us by post. New to Switzerland? Please enclose your confirmation of place of residence.
  3. Don't forget to cancel: Send the notice of cancellation to your current insurer by registered post and by the given deadline. This is usually the last working day in November.
  4. You’ll then receive confirmation of admission from us.

What to do for supplementary insurance:

  1. Generate your own offer in the premium calculator or request personal advice.
  2. Take out the insurance online or send the signed application to us by post. New to Switzerland? Please enclose your confirmation of place of residence.
  3. We may need to ask for medical details. You’ll be informed of our decision as quickly as possible. Please don't cancel your current supplementary insurance before receiving our written confirmation of admission.
  4. Send the notice of cancellation to your current insurer by registered post and by the given deadline. This is usually the last working day in September.

Frequently asked questions

There is a proliferation of doctors’ practices and specialist clinics in towns and cities. And if there are a large number of medical services available in a particular region, greater use will be made of them. That’s why healthcare spending is higher in urban areas – and premiums are too. Incidentally, it’s the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) that’s responsible for defining the premium regions.

You can save on premiums by choosing basic insurance without a free choice of doctor.

In the case of basic insurance, your cover commences from the date on which the insurance begins – usually 1 January.

In the case of supplementary insurance, there is often a qualifying period. You can only start drawing benefits once a certain waiting period has elapsed, e.g. for dental damage under Dental Insurance or for pregnancy under Hospitalisation Insurance.
