Physiotherapy & MTT: What does CSS pay?

Physiotherapy and medical training therapy (MTT) help relieve pain and keep you moving. Your doctor prescribes the treatment. CSS pays a share of the cost through your basic insurance. Look in myCSS to see what CSS pays.

Physiotherapy: When is it helpful?

You need a prescription from your doctor for physiotherapy, for example if you have:

  • pain in your back, neck or joints
  • injuries after an accident
  • rehabilitation after surgery
  • chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis
  • balance problems

What does basic insurance cover for physiotherapy?

Mandatory basic insurance covers physiotherapy if you have a doctor’s prescription.

Basic insurance pays if:

  • the treatment is medically necessary.
  • it’s prescribed by a doctor.
  • it’s carried out by a recognised physiotherapist.

One prescription covers 9 sessions. If treatment isn’t completed after 36 sessions, a medical report is required for further treatment.

Important: You pay the deductible and retention fee from your own pocket. Without a doctor’s prescription, basic insurance doesn’t cover any costs.

Need physiotherapy? Here's what to do:

  1. Visit your doctor
You’ll be examined and given a prescription for physiotherapy.
  2. Arrange an appointment
Choose a physiotherapy practice and book a session. Your doctor’s practice can help you decide.
  3. Start treatment
Bring your prescription to your first appointment. Begin physiotherapy within five weeks of the prescription.
  4. Billing
The physiotherapy practice bills CSS directly. You don’t need to submit anything.

Medical training therapy (MTT): What is it & who pays?

MTT is conducted on fitness equipment in a physiotherapy practice – supervised by a physiotherapist. It helps you build strength and improve mobility.

Basic insurance covers MTT if:

  • it’s prescribed by a doctor.
  • you’ve already had at least one physiotherapy session.

MTT is then covered up to a maximum of 3 months.

FAQs

No. Give it to your therapist. The physiotherapy practice handles everything and will bill CSS directly. You don’t need to submit anything.

That's normal. CSS duly accepts prescriptions and doesn’t issue a confirmation. You can start physiotherapy. Important: Your therapist needs to be recognised by basic insurance. It's best to get this clarified by the practice itself.

Ask your physiotherapy practice directly. They know exactly:

  • how many sessions you’ve already had and
  • how many are still needed.

CSS only sees the sessions that have been billed.

Yes, as long as they’re recognised by basic insurance. If you’re unsure, ask the practice or the CSS Client Service Centre.

Yes. Sessions you’ve already had will be counted.

Yes, if your doctor prescribes home visits. These are covered by basic insurance.

Yes. Without one, you pay the full cost. Supplementary insurance doesn’t contribute.

Your doctor reviews your situation. If you still need treatment, a medical report is sent to CSS. CSS then decides whether to continue covering the costs.
