Onion poultice

Required material

1 - 2 onions

1 cloth and gauze

1 woollen cloth or towel

Warm water, if needed

Application

For an onion poultice, finely slice 1 to 2 onions and wrap in a cloth. Use cold for acute pain, and warm for chronic pain.

Leave the poultice on for 15 to 30 minutes. The poultice should always feel pleasant to the patient; if not, the poultice should be removed immediately.

For a warm poultice, heat the onion in warm water or in a warm steam bath.

  • Sore throat: Finely slice 1 to 2 onions and wrap in a cloth. Use cold for acute pain, and warm for chronic pain.
  • Earache: Slice 1 - 2 onions, wrap in a cloth and apply the cool poultice to the ear. Use three times a day for around 30 minutes.
  • Toothache: Slice onion, wrap in a cloth and apply to the painful cheek.
