Reminder – what happens if you have an outstanding bill?

You’ve received a reminder from us because a bill hasn’t been paid. Let us show you what that means, what deadlines apply and how to avoid reminder fees. Ensuring your insurance cover remains in place.

What is a reminder?

As the name suggests, a reminder is a friendly message telling you that a bill hasn’t yet been paid. You’ll be sent a reminder if we don’t receive payment by the due date.

How does the reminder process work at CSS?

  • Bill & due date
Each bill features a due date by which it must be paid. If we haven’t received payment by that date, a reminder will be issued.
  • First reminder
If we don’t receive payment when due, you’ll be sent a first reminder.
  • Payment demand (second reminder)
If payment is still not made following the reminder, you’ll be sent a payment demand. We charge a fee of CHF 25 for this.

What happens if you don’t pay?

The consequences of not paying a bill vary depending on what type of insurance you have. Different rules apply to mandatory basic insurance and to voluntary supplementary insurance.

Basic insurance

If the bill isn’t paid, we are obliged to take legal action to collect the outstanding amount (debt collection proceedings). You cannot switch to another general health insurance company until all the outstanding amounts have been paid.

Supplementary insurance

If the bill isn’t paid, we will not assume any treatment costs under supplementary insurance. We can decide to terminate your supplementary insurance, and you may be subject to debt collection proceedings. Benefits will not be paid retroactively, even after the bill has been paid.

Unable to pay – what you can do

  • Get in touch at an early stage: Let us know as soon as possible that you won’t be able to meet the deadline.
  • Arrange to pay in instalments: You can arrange an instalment plan with us under certain circumstances.
  • Extend the payment deadline: Under certain circumstances, we’ll agree to put the reminder process on hold for 30 days.
